I love coffee, this is fairly obvious to most people who have spent any amount of time with me, or who have read my blog before, but it’s true. Not only do I love a simple cup of coffee but I also enjoy coming up with new decadent coffee drinks, that are simple to make at home (without all the fancy equipment).
Today I made a Black Forest Latte, at home using everyday kitchen items. Below is the recipe, with instructions on making it with and without any specialty products.
You will need – edibles:
1 oz Double strength coffee OR espresso
3-4 oz Milk
2 tbs Chocolate syrup
2 tbs Cherry syrup OR maraschino cherry juice OR (1 drop) cherry flavored extract
Whipped cream (optional)
You will need – equipment:
Coffee maker or Espresso maker
Bowl/pan & Whisk or Electric whisk or Milk steamer
Everyday Items – To make double strength coffee is simple. In your coffee maker add 4 tablespoons of coffee for every 2 cups you plan to brew. For this recipe you will only need a couple ounces of coffee (depending on the size of cup you plan to use) Frothing milk without a steamer. This seems to be something that people over think. Put about a 1/4-1/3 cup of milk into a small mixing bowl – heat for 15 seconds at a time in the microwave to get it hot (not boiling, we do not want to cook or curdle the milk) then get to whisking!
In the photo above, I put a pan on the stove with milk and heated it up. I whisked using an electric hand mixer and got some great foam! Professional baristas around the world are probably having a small heart attack right now at my statements, and that’s fine, but not everyone has the money for the espresso makers, milk steamers etc. or the space to store them all. I have an espresso maker. It’s on the top shelf in the garage, I cannot reach it unless Hubs is home. Does it make awesome coffee? Yes! Can I make a great drink without it? Yep!
If you have an espresso maker, you will need 1 shot of espresso for this drink.
Putting the drink together is simple. Chocolate Syrup and cherry flavoring goes first! Then pour in your hot coffee/espresso. Lastly pour in your milk, and top with whipped cream. I do not like whipped cream in my coffee drinks, so for the photo I added more foam. You can even sprinkle a bit of cocoa powder on top!
